5/13/2023 0 Comments Books like a far wilder magicMargaret begrudgingly allows him to stay, but on one condition: he must join the hunt with her.Īlthough they make an unlikely team, Wes is in awe of the girl who has endured alone on the outskirts of a town that doesn’t want her, in this creaking house of ghosts and sorrow. But when Wes arrives at Welty Manor, he finds only Margaret and her bloodhound Trouble. Fired from every apprenticeship he’s landed, his last chance hinges on Master Welty taking him in. While Margaret is the best sharpshooter in town, only teams of two can register, and she needs an alchemist. If Margaret wins the hunt, it may finally bring her mother home. Whoever is able to kill the hala will earn fame and riches, and unlock an ancient magical secret. Synopsis: When Margaret Welty spots the legendary hala, the last living mythical creature, she knows the Halfmoon Hunt will soon follow. Then the H decides to sell the bankrupt h as a prostitute to some creepy guy and the h agrees to do this. This leads to the h punching him out in a completely pathetic scene at a big public dinner, injuring her hand. He decimates the h's father and then he sets out to decimate the h too for thwarting his will, by bankrupting her, evicting her from her home, blackballing her from getting a job and (tho she helped a lot in this,) humiliating her socially. This is the final straw as far as the H is concerned, he can't have his own way so he is going to war. We learn that the H and the h's abusive father have been in competition for years, the father is very unscrupulous and ruined the H's family business years earlier. So she guilted the h by claiming she was pregnant until the h agreed to do something dramatic enough to get her off the hook. Totally Tacky Behavior and it all came about because the BFF was pressured into marrying the H by her family and she is in love with someone else. The book starts with the h interrupting the wedding of the H and her BFF by claiming she is the H's mistress. I despise this book from the bottom of my heart, so take this spoilerization with a grain of salt because a lot of HP Voyagers love this one. The first in the Camelot Rising trilogy, this book is about Guinevere, who is sent to Camelot to marry King Arthur, a man she’s never even met. Publishing still needs to do some work when it comes to publishing diversely in this area! The Guinevere Deception by Kiersten White Note: Most of these Arthurian legend books are written by white authors. If you’re looking for some more recent, modern books about King Arthur, we’ve got you covered! King Arthur has been capturing imaginations for centuries, and continues to inspire stories into the twenty-first century, whether they’re retellings, stories about side characters we associate with Arthur’s court, or reimaginings set in space! Because there’s no story or version that’s considered “canon,” the universe is the limit, and we love to see so many iterations of Arthurian legend books. 5/12/2023 0 Comments Thick essaysMcMillan Cottom is far more accomplished than I could ever hope to be. As a Ph.D.- carrying university professor who has written for the likes of The Atlantic and The New York Times and hosts a podcast with Roxane Gay. Is this allowed? Are we, as Black women writers, allowed to see each other and write to and about each other this plainly?ĭon’t get me wrong, I don’t presume to be on the same level as 2020 MacArthur Fellow Dr. And, as I delved deeper into the book, I couldn’t help asking myself: Tressie McMillan Cottom in the opening pages of THICK, something instantly felt different about the reading experience. This contortion act is a skill that I’ve had a lifetime to hone, though I know I’m not the only one.īut, as I oriented myself to the voice of author Dr. In the vast majority of stories served up to me as “classics” and “essentials” over the years, I’ve had to contort my reality to fit that of the traditional (read: not Black and not female) narrator. Nothing prepared me to be so directly acknowledged and addressed in a text. When I started reading THICK: And Other Essays, I had to keep putting it down to compose myself. So even the purest of hearts, free of inner deception, will not perceive and understand an object unless endowed with proper intellectual equipment. And here’s the rub: the concepts, the anticipatory classifications and interpretations, contain theories which a) had to be discovered and built up by a long process, and b) may yet in the future turn out to be false. Countless similar examples can be invoked: the capacity to perceive depends on the possession of the appropriate concepts. A layman looking at a car engine just sees a jumble of metal objects and wires a person who knows about car engines can immediately identify the parts and see their interconnection. Before one can seize an object, one must be equipped with a whole mass of sensitivities, concepts, expectations, background assumptions. “The co-presence of mind and object simply is not sufficient for an apprehension or comprehension of any object. 5/12/2023 0 Comments The great alone audio bookChameleonic veteran Julia Whelan makes the 15 hours of Hannah's ( The Nightingale) latest best seller unstoppable, as she agilely narrates the twists and turns.
